Rotary joints: what are they and what are they used for?

Rotary joints explanation and common applications in industry

When we talk about rotary joints, we are referring to the system used in a large number of industries to ensure sealing in the joint between a fixed component and a rotating component.

Rotary joints basically consist of a connection guide element, a bearing or graphite bearing, and a mechanical seal that makes the joint sealed. But which rotary joint to choose in each case? How do rotary joints work? In which sectors can we find this mechanical system?

Here we tell you about the types of rotary joints available and which models to choose according to each industrial sector.

Types of rotary joints

Types of rotary joints with single-way and double-way options There are different types of rotary joints with their own characteristics, depending on the applications and needs of each industry: we find water rotary joints, steam rotary joints, hydraulic oil rotary joints…

In any case, these systems allow the passage of the fluid to be sealed through the rotary connection, and can do so in two ways: in one direction only (known as a single-way rotary joint) or in both directions, without mixing the inlet and outlet fluids (in this case, we speak of a double-way rotary joint or multi-way rotary joint).

Single-way rotary joints

A single-way rotary joint is a device used to provide a leak-tight seal between a fixed pressurised supply line and a rotating machine or cylinder. This type of joint allows the transfer of fluids – water, oil or air – from a static to a rotating system or vice versa.

Double-way rotary joints

When we talk about seals that allow the passage of fluid in both directions without mixing the incoming and outgoing fluid, we refer to double-way rotary joints.

Multi-way rotary joints

In the case of multi-way rotary joints, these are unions that have the ability to seal several pipes at the same time, allowing different fluids to be directed into different systems without mixing them. They are versatile and suitable for complex industrial applications that require the management of multiple fluid flows.

Rotary joint models by sector

In addition to their applications, we can also find rotary sealing devices according to the industrial sector, as they are especially common in areas where flattening/drying drums or calenders are required, such as the textile or paper sector.

However, they can also be used in other areas such as the steel industry and glass manufacturing, where steam generation or thermal oil sealing is common.

Other sectors as diverse as construction and mining also use rotating joints in the lubricated heads. Also in the generation of energy through solar panels where they heat the oil and, where these panels rotate according to the sunlight.

Finally, it is also common to use rotary joints in stamping presses, one of the most common machines in different industrial sectors.

What is the service life of a rotary joint?

The service life of a rotary joint will always depend on several factors: the time of use, the working conditions to which it will be subjected, the type of fluid, the temperature, the pressure, … And, above all, it will depend on the quality materials of the rotary joint, which is what will ensure a longer service life and an effective sealing system.

At Lidering we have a wide range of high quality rotary joints, so if you need to find compatible rotary joints please do not hesitate to contact us.

In addition, it is important to know that our Lidering technical team can repair rotary joints, mainly the large ones, so you should make sure before you decide to change your current system for a new one. This is a great opportunity to reduce costs, as the repair of the part will extend its life, encouraging the rotating joints to have a second chance and avoiding the dilapidation of these.

Our rotary joints repair service helps us to remain aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN in the 2023 agenda and to continue to strive for a more sustainable industry.

Contact us and we will find the best rotary joint solution for your industry.
